Rust Treatment for Classic Cars

A way of preventing rust taking hold of the body of your car is to spot it early enough to apply a rust treatment. Corrosion can start in small chips and scratches to the paintwork of a car caused by flying stones or minor impact damage. Such damage is easy to spot and treat provided you do take car of your car through a regular routine of washing and casting an examining eye over the body work.  The more difficult rust spotting places on a car are where panels join together.

Rust Prevention

The best way to minimise the aggravation caused by rust is to make sure the classic car you buy is well maintained, clean and guaranteed rust-free.  Another way, particularly for those residing in damp climates such as the UK, would be to have a bone dry dehumidified garage to preserve a classic vehicle, but sadly most can only dream about such an option. A good compromise in many ways is a car port alongside the house, as this keeps the worst of the elements off your car, and importantly allows for good ventilation. In fact, if you do drive an old car as your daily run-around and it gets rained on, it will probably be better off being parked in a well-ventilated carport than locked away in a stuffy garage. The through ventilation in the carport can help dry the car off far more effectively than parking a soaked classic in the garage.

If your car is predominantly parked out in the open, you will need to routinely check that the screen seals are operating effectively, as water leaking into the footwells can wreak havoc with floorpans, sills and door pillars. Areas of your car worth checking for water leaks include sunroof drain channels (where fitted), windscreen wiper spindle grommets (the rubber seals where the wiper spindles stick out through the bodywork), leaking air conditioner pipe work under the dashboard, missing rubber grommets in the floorpan, poor welding repairs that are letting water in at the seams, roof mounted aerials that are not sealed properly and door seals.

A major cause of rust is through the build up of mud in inaccessible areas underneath the car. Mud retains moisture very effectively. Wherever possible maintain the underside of your car in a clean, sludge-free condition. It is worth applying an underseal. There are many anti-rust solutions that can be sprayed or brushed onto the underside of your car. Another threat to classic car owners is that of salt thrown down by gritters during the winter months! The salt and water mix that gets blasted around your car is a highly corrosive. If you rely on your classic for daily use, then ensure that the underside is kept as clean as possible (regular jet washes can help here) and either remove the rare chrome bits altogether, or liberally coat them with a hard wax polish and leave it on (i.e. don't polish it off).
