Rust Proofing Treatments
Rust is a red compound, which forms by the action of moisture and oxygen on unprotected metal. It is a process of oxidation in which iron combines with water and oxygen to form rust.
Rust proofing is a process by which iron or steel objects such as cars are treated to prevent the formation of rust. The degradation process cannot be stopped completely unless a rust prevention treatment is applied every year to two depending on prevailing environmental conditions.
Rust proof treatments
are applied to the metal body-work during vehicle manufacture. This remains effective on a vehicle for up to five years, but this does depend on the car design and to the local climate to which the car is exposed. The salt applied to road surfaces to de-ice them during freezing conditions has an adverse effect on the rate at which rust can set-in.
If you plan to keep your car for five years or more it is worth applying a rust proofing coat despite the fact that many modern cars are being made with longer-lasting galvanized steel.
An after-market anti-rust treatment may enhance the value of a used car. Kits are available to order and come with all the products required to apply to the internal and external surfaces of vehicles. The rust proof fluid will need to be applied using a compressor and spray gun. This method enables the fluid to reach all nooks and crannies. Rust proofing should be applied under the bonnet, front and back doors, in the boot, sills, underside and wheel arches.
A second coat can be applied a few days later for complete coverage and to give a thicker waterproof covering. This is particularly advisable for the underside and wheel arches as they are most exposed to water and salt, the main contributors to rust build-up.
DINITROL Rust Treatments
DINITROL 3125 is a thixotropic rust preventative fluid that will not crack, chip or peel and is designed for use on internal or external cavities. It has excellent creeping capabilities that will penetrate through dirt and rust preventing further corrosion even in seams up to 20 mm wide. Anti corrosion additives and surface-active properties allow the application to be carried out on damp and dirty surfaces without affecting the products performance but to save waste it is always best to apply to areas that are as clean as possible. Ideal for use on chassis, box sections, sills and door bottoms.
DINITROL 3654 is a rust preventative fluid that has been designed for use on open surfaces as well as internal cavities. It is best applied to clean metal. It has excellent creeping capabilities that will penetrate a seam of up to 20 mm. This product is based mainly on synthetic waxes, corrosion inhibitors and white spirit type solvent. After application and the solvent has evaporated the product leaves a waxy, water repellent protective film that gives excellent
rust protection
. This DINITROL product is ideal for all chassis, sills, and box sections where there is no damp or moisture prior to treatment.
DINITROL 4941 is a tough black elastic rust
prevention
product, which provides long-term resistance against rust and abrasion. After application and the solvents have evaporated a waxy protective film remains on the treated area giving high protection. The film is heat resistant and retains its adhesion without cracking. Drying time is between 6 to 12 hours. It provides a hard wearing, flexible coating thereby offering excellent under body protection.
