Rust Prevention Will Keep Rust at Bay

Rust can be annoying, expensive and very damaging indeed hence rust prevention is advisable.  It can affect cars, boats, buses and trains. Anything that moves and plenty of things that don’t can become subject to rusting and corrosion. Owners of classic cars and motorcycles usually become experts on rust, while any car owner should know a thing or two about this particularly nasty ‘illness’. Rust is the result of the oxidation of metal. It occurs when metal is directly exposed to the elements; hence it’s common appearance on our modes of transport. New cars come well protected, with rust prevention treatments ensuring that they are safe from rust for some years.  However, this protection does not last for ever, and small chips and scratches can expose unprotected metal to air and moisture.

Small chips may seem insignificant, but without treatment you will soon be the not-so-proud owner of an old rust bucket.  Rust spreads, it’s like a virus.  Once it has a hold the rust itself acts a bit like a sponge, drawing moisture into the metal and underneath the protective barrier that had been so useful.  Once rusting has started, it is not easy to stop and any expert will tell you that preventing rust in the first place is by far the better course of action.

Rust Treatments

Products vary when it comes to rust treatment and prevention.  As already pointed out, the first one is free:  vigilance.  By regularly checking your vehicle, be it old, new or classic, you can identify problem areas quickly and treat them promptly.  This will save you money in the long run.  If you discover an area of damage, apply a wax or oil to protect the metalwork against moisture and air, which will stop the formation of any rust.  If rust has already developed then there are products that help to stop it from spreading.  Some of these simply cover the rust and through chemical reactions covert the top of it into an iron compound.  This effectively seals the rust, stopping it from developing.  The downside to these products is that rust is then trapped and while the metal underneath will not deteriorate it is not an attractive solution.  For those with classic cars to protect – inevitably classic cars will have some rust hidden away somewhere – then products that dissolve away the rust and then allow you to seal the surface can produce a better result. There are also a range of treatments that require significant time preparing and removing the rust before sealing the surface.

For classic car owners especially, staying vigilant will stop the progression of rust and the damage it can cause.  Classic cars tend to be only used occasionally, and while they may be kept safe from the elements when not in use, neglect allows moisture in the air to do its work.  Regular inspection and quick action, combined with the application of a good protective rust prevention wax or oil, will protect classic and not-so-classic cars and their owner’s pockets.

Prevention is better than cure. There are a number of products that can offer prevention against rust. Products are available either as oils, waxes, fluids and coatings.  The range is vast. Dinitrol rust prevention products have been found to be very effective and easy to use while still remaining affordable.
