For many people the only affordable way to buy a car is to buy a second hand or used one. It is therefore important that you make the right choice and don't end up having to park your car in the drive-way indefinitely while you save-up to pay for repairs. If you do your research thoroughly there is no reason why you shouldn't get a well looked after, reliable vehicle for your hard earned money. The safest option is to buy from a reputable car dealer (the reviews from previous buyers will give you added confidence in how reliable they are). Buying privately or at an auction can be risky. Here are a few general tips to consider:

Driving in bad weather such as heavy rain, fog, icy conditions and snow
is mentally demanding as it requires a greater level of concentration. Winter driving also puts more strain on a vehicle - it takes more power to start the engine, more likely to use the heating system and keep your headlights on all of which put more demand on the battery. It is therefore important that you make sure your vehicle is well maintained. You should check your car thoroughly to minimize the risk of breaking down. This should also include making sure the exterior and interior are free of any signs of rust and if so are appropriately treated with rust treatment preferably before the start of winter.

Driving in bad weather requires even greater levels of
concentration and is therefore more tiring than driving in good weather
conditions. If your journey requires you to be on the road for longer
than two hours you will need to take a break to maintain good levels of
concentration. Here are steps to follow to avoid trouble in bad weather:

Britain's motorists are increasingly falling for the world of old-time
cars, suggests a classic auction specialist Historic at Brooklands. Many
new cars seem so soulless despite being comfortable and practical to
drive. Many have drab features which illustrate them as being designed and manufactured purely as a means of transport but with a
higher level of safety features versus older cars. The same can rarely
be said about classic cars, particularly when you look at images of
beautifully sculpted Jaguar XJ Series or fun-focused MGs, and
the dreamy thrill of owning a Triumph Stag. Taking on a classic car is done for a number of different reasons, but whatever they are the end result is that it needs to the restored, rust-proofed and have a thoroughly overhauled engine before it can take to the roads again.

On Thursday 3rd November the Department For Transport announced new
rules for all owners of Classic Cars and Motorbikes bought before 1960.
The proposal to exempt such vehicles from an annual MOT test was made
based on the fact that classic cars are well maintained by their owners.
As a result of the high level of engine maintenance, rust-proofing and road worthiness, classic cars are reported to have a much lower accident and MoT failure rate than newer cars.

Almost all metals and alloys are susceptible to corrosion but iron rust
is the most recognizable form and appears when iron oxide forms on iron
or steel components that are exposed to air or water. Air and moisture
are the primary causes of why steel, iron, silver, and other metals
begin to deteriorate.
Corrosion is the destruction of a material caused by the environment in
which the material resides. For example, steel rusts when immersed in
seawater. Corrosion is a natural process that cannot be prevented, but
intervention with the correct measures can control it. Without
intervention, corrosion progresses and becomes damaging.
Hence the availability of rust treatment products such as DINITROL,
which are formulated for use on all forms of vehicles, marine vessels
and off-shore structures.

The way vehicles are assembled makes it possible for rust to form. The
speed at which this can happen is dependent on environmental and road
surface conditions the vehicle is regularly exposed to. During the
assembly process the parts of a vehicle suffer a number of folds and
rivet points. This shaping damages the vehicle’s original rust proofing,
which means that it is vulnerable to rust formation over time.

The average cost of a family car plus taxes, MOT, repairs, fuel and
insurance is almost the same as monthly mortgage repayments. For this reason there is more incentive to care for our car as we are more likely to want to keep it for longer. Most of us spend a
fair amount of our time in our car and put a lot of trust in it
expecting the motor to start each time we put the key in the ignition
and to give us a trouble-free journey. We, therefore need to ensure our
car gets the right routine care and treatment to ensure the longevity
of our investment. Rust can happen anywhere, not just in harsh snowy or
humid conditions. Rust prevention is easy with proper car care.
