Rust Prevention for all Classic Cars
An
obsession for all classic car owners and enthusiasts should be rust prevention.
The reason being is that even the smallest specks of rust can not only ruin the
appearance of an otherwise perfect car, but it can spread if not treated quick
enough. Rust prevention is better than cure when it comes to
the corrosive effects of rust. Once rust starts it can be very difficult to get
rid of completely.
For those classic car owners whose cars are showing signs of rust, there are
many rust treatment products available on the market, but their effectiveness
depends on having direct access to the entire area of rust. This can be
difficult if your classic is starting to rust in a hard to access place, which
is probably mostly the case. Rust prevention is therefore the
best approach. However, for the best results, rust prevention should be applied to rust-free
cars.
If you are
going to restore a classic car, this would be a good time to apply an anti-rust
product to protect against future rusting. Correctly sealing the seams of welds
will also help prevent rust at the edges of new metal. When painting your
restored car, it is advisable to use a good zinc primer to coat any bare metal
prior applying a coat of paint. This helps to rust proof new metal and keep
your classic car looking grand for many years.
Rust Treatment
There are
many products on the market for preventing rust and for treating or
neutralizing rust. Neutralizers and converters are products designed to treat
rust. They work by converting the top surface of the rust into a protective
layer of organic iron compound. This layer will prevent oxygen and water from
reacting with the metal underneath. The problem with this is that it
encapsulates the rust between these layers and the 'healthy' metal underneath.
If the rusted area is not completely dry on application the existing rust will
spread from underneath the neutralizer. It is often, also difficult to
successfully treat the entire surface of the rust, as it is easy to miss pits
and other awkward surface features commonly found on rusted metal. Missing just
the smallest area when treating rust with one of these products renders the
whole operation pointless.
