The presence of water and moisture in the air, especially sea air are the perfect ingredients for the onset of rust to boats, vehicles, oil rigs and steel structures in buildings. It is therefore important that they are all well maintained and any signs of rust are treated to protect their longevity. Rust and corrosion are costing the world industry billions of pounds a year. In many countries, industries are situated along a broad coastal strip. Sea air is conducive to a high level of rusting taking place. Many of these industries virtually accept that rust is inevitable and an expensive cost.
The best way to combat rust to boats and vehicles is with regular maintenance and following
rust prevention
steps. To achieve this you have to stop the air and water from coming into contact with steel. As part of ongoing boat maintenance, washing your boat off with clean fresh water and a mild detergent after each use, is highly recommended. Then dry all metal, glass, and flat surfaces before storing. Keep your boat covered to protect it from sun and rain. It is also important that you routinely inspect your boat and its components to help keep rust and corrosion under control. The same is true for all vehicles. They need to be washed regularly preferably with a jet spray to the top and underside of the vehicle.
There are products available that are extremely helpful in your fight against rust. Dinitrol products are highly effective in marine and transport applications.
Dinitrol 4941
and
Dinitrol 4942
are a thixotropic external underbody
rust prevention
fluid, which provides long term resistance against corrosion and abrasion, even under severe conditions. Dinitrol gives a tough, elastic, waxy protective coating.
To keep a boat rust and mildew free during storage, you should eliminate excess moisture in the storage area. One way to do this is to use a moisture control product which work by absorbing moisture to help protect boats from rust, mold and mildew.
