For many people the only affordable way to buy a car is to buy a second hand or used one. It is therefore important that you make the right choice and don't end up having to park your car in the drive-way indefinitely while you save-up to pay for repairs. If you do your research thoroughly there is no reason why you shouldn't get a well looked after, reliable vehicle for your hard earned money. The safest option is to buy from a reputable car dealer (the reviews from previous buyers will give you added confidence in how reliable they are). Buying privately or at an auction can be risky. Here are a few general tips to consider:

  • View and drive as many models of cars as possible so that you can compare them rather than rushing out to buy the first car that fits your budget - you need to feel comfortable and safe when driving any length journey,
  • A high mileage car that has been used mostly on motorways maybe in better condition than one with lower mileage driven short daily journeys on local roads - so don't be put off by high mileage as most modern cars are capable of being driven for 100 000 miles or more without any problems if they are well maintained,
  • Check the service history book supplied with the car and make sure it has been stamped by authorised garages after each service and that it has a full service history,
  • Ask the dealer whether car will be serviced before it is delivered to you - otherwise you need to budget to have this done,
  • If the car is older than three years check that it has a recent MoT certificate,
  • Check for rust and mismatched paintwork. This could be an indication that the car has been in an accident,
  • Make sure the car sits evenly on the suspension,
  • Check the tyres for signs of unusual wear,
  • Drive the car to check that the brakes work, steering feels positive and car doesn't pull to one side and that the gears can be selected with ease,
  • It maybe worthwhile requesting a vehicle history check to make sure car hasn't been stolen, it is the correct car model, not been written-off by an insurance company and that the mileage is correct  - this service is offered by major motoring companies,
  • Check whether car will be supplied with road tax - if not this must be bought before you drive the car on the road,
  • When you have decided on the car you want to buy, do some additional research to check  that the price offered by the dealer is consistent with what you have seen in car magazines, forecourts and car sales papers.
If the car you have decided to buy is older than three years from date of manufacture, it is worth applying a rust treatment to the exterior bodywork and interior of your car. Rust proofing will be extend the working life of a vehicle and prevent the need for expensive repair work. DIY rust treatment kits are available and includes a spray gun for easy application.
