Britain's motorists are increasingly falling for the world of old-time cars, suggests a classic auction specialist Historic at Brooklands. Many new cars seem so soulless despite being comfortable and practical to drive. Many have drab features which illustrate them as being designed and manufactured purely as a means of transport but with a higher level of safety features versus older cars. The same can rarely be said about classic cars, particularly when you look at images of beautifully sculpted Jaguar XJ Series or fun-focused MGs, and the dreamy thrill of owning a Triumph Stag. Taking on a classic car is done for a number of different reasons, but whatever they are the end result is that it needs to the restored, rust-proofed and have a thoroughly overhauled engine before it can take to the roads again.

The origins of the UK automotive industry date back to the final years of the 19th century when the first petrol-guzzling vehicle was manufactured. By the 1950s the UK was the second-largest manufacturer of cars in the world (after the United States) and the largest exporter. The British automobile industry began in the early 20th century and has played a massive role in creating the society we live in today. It was this that led to the creation the system of motorways linking the country together. It is also what led to the creation of the suburbs, many of which you can only get to by car.

Classic car and motorcycle collecting and restoration are a hobby practiced by people all over the world. People have a love affair with antique cars for various reasons. Some love the attention it brings when they drive their restored vehicle - if you love being the center of attention; this is a guaranteed way to achieve it.

But, for many it is the love of tinkering - what car fanatic wouldn't love to turn up the hood of a Model T Ford and customize it to their specifications?

There are also those that see classic car ownership as an investment. This can be to your favour if you know the market, consider yourself to be a good mechanic who is able to restore and rustproof an antique and are good at finding deals. Finding, repairing, and reselling antique automobiles can be an excellent investment. Like any other form of investment, there are cycles. There are times when the market is flooded with sellers and few buyers. And conversely, there are times when you have many buyers vying for the same model of car. The key is to know when to buy, when to sell, and what to look for. Buying spare parts also has to be factored into the restoration process for both buyers and sellers.

And finally, the love of classic cars may also be based on nostalgia bringing back childhood memories. The nostalgia market is reported to be worth billions.

Pursuing a love of classic (vintage or antique) vehicles is just another way of looking fondly and nostalgically back at our culture and remembering our country's history.
